Field trip resources:
Wadsworth Mansion Field Trip
This field trip is designed for 3rd or 4th graders, but can easily be adapted to other grades as desired. The field trip we offer most frequently is a 4 hour field trip during which the students are broken up into smaller groups to participate in a nature hike through Wadsworth Park, a hands-on lesson about Vernal Pool ecosystems and a docent-led historical tour of Wadsworth Mansion. We help organize bus transportation to and from school and there is a break for the students to eat their bag lunches on the extensive lawn behind the Mansion.

Curriculum: General Ecosystems/Adaptations
The 3 exercises below are an excellent introduction for the field trip:
Adaptations match up Worksheet - View/Print PDF
Students have trouble understanding that adaptations are simply special features an organism has. This is a fun matching exercise that can get the students thinking about creatures that live in CT. For the adaptations exercise it is fun to have the students act out some part of the adaptation as you go over the answers.
Ecosystems Worksheet - View/Print PDF
This worksheet helps students review what is a producer, consumer and decomposer.
Field Ecosystems Exercise - View/Print PDF
This is an activity that teachers can do with students. Contact Lucy to get images of most of many of the producers, consumers & decomposers that students can cut out to make a food web.
Field Trip Worksheets:
The field trip to Wadsworth includes a vernal pool exploration, a forest ecosystems walk & a tour of Wadsworth Mansion. For the walk & the mansion tour there are worksheets that can be done after the field trip.
We ask that teachers print out and copy these 2 handouts for the vernal pool portion of the field trip.
Vernal pool handout 1 - View/Print PDF (2 pages, please copy on 1 sheet of paper back front to conserve trees)
Vernal pool handout 2 - View/Print PDF (1 page, please staple to handout 1)
Activities after the Field Trip:
Here are two worksheets that can be used to follow up after the field trip. You can have students fill out the worksheets or talk through them as a group. Many teachers have found the questions work well as a group discussion.
Forest Ecosystems Worksheet - this worksheet goes over many of the things the students saw & learned about on the Forest Ecosystems walk & asks students what they liked.
